Adding an extra email address (alias)
A second address that lands in the same mailbox — no extra inbox, no extra password, nothing else to sign in to.
What an alias actually is
An alias is another name for the same mailbox. The mailbox stays exactly the same — it just now has two addresses that lead to it.
- Incoming — mail sent to the new address arrives in your normal inbox along with everything else. There is no second mailbox to check.
- Outgoing — when you send mail it always goes out from your original address. That is what the recipient sees, not the alias.
An alias only receives — You cannot send from it. If you need to send from a different address that is a separate request — say so explicitly. Why it is useful
- A change of surname, without losing the old address.
- A short, readable address for papers and business cards.
- A dedicated address for a conference or project that reaches you directly.
How to request it
Open a TMR request asking to add an alias. State:
- Your existing address.
- The extra address you would like.
The address may be taken — If someone else already uses it you will be asked to pick another. Worth offering two options up front.
